The kids left just in time yesterday. The weather changed - it was windy, overcast and we even had some rain.
We spent the day inside reading and playing cribbage - a very lazy day!
It calmed down in the evening and we spent a very peaceful night on the mooring:

We decided to stay another day in Avalon because John offered to treat me to a massage at the new Island Spa. What a gorgeous place!
I had an 80 minute massage on a hot sand table!! Managed to stumble down the stairs on my rubbery legs to meet John at the Avalon Grille for lunch. I had Ahi Tartare with radishes, oranges and avocado:
And John had a Duck Salad Sandwich:
We were moving back to White's in the morning so we did some provisioning at Vons before heading back to the boat.

The weather was still chilly and overcast but there wasn't any wind and the seas were flat so we had a pleasant ride back up to White's.
We pretty much had the anchorage to ourselves.
We spent the afternoon in the dinghy searching out the leopard sharks (I had never seen seen such big ones!) and enjoying the beautiful local geology. (Click here to read John's story about the geology.)

It was very foggy today, we didn't see the sun all day. But there wasn't any wind so it was still a pleasant day. We took a long dinghy ride up the coast. The highlight of the day for me was seeing the seaplane that flew over the anchorage. Actually made one quick touchdown on the water. I love seaplanes! John and I have flown on them several times in Seattle and Vancouver. I'm not a big fan of flying, always a little bit nervous on big planes. But I am so comfortable on seaplanes and really enjoy them.
We bought fishing licenses before we left home but somehow never had enough energy to put a rod in the water. Luckily I had a backup plan in the freezer -- yellowtail from Staff & Jeff's fishing trip to Mexico. I wanted to make a fruit salsa to serve with the fish but eleven days into the trip our fruit bowl didn't have a lot of options. We did have a ripe pineapple so I chopped some of it with red onion, red pepper, cilantro, jalapeno and lime juice. It was perfect with the yellowtail! I served it with Cheesey Orzo and John chose the perfect wine - 2011 Friulano Miani Fruili Colli Orientali.

The sun finally came out today around 2:00 - hurray!! But it was windy so we didn't spend too much time outside. It was the perfect day to spend in the galley roasting a pork belly and making "grownup" applesauce.
To make the applesauce-Core and quarter the apples. In a small saucepan melt butter, sugar, salt, whole clove, star anise and Calvados (an apple liquor which makes it "grownup"applesauce!). Toss the sauce with apples and roast in a small bake pan at 400 degrees for about 45 minutes. Scoop the apples out of the skins and break into chunks. Remove the clove and star anise and serve with the pork belly.

The sun came out before noon today. We took the dinghy down to Avalon to pick up some groceries and our nephew David who arrived by Catalina Express. So happy to see him:
We had a bumpy ride back to the boat but it was all worth it when we had a couple of flying fish take off next to the dinghy.

In August 2014 the effects of Hurricane Marie destroyed the pier at White's Landing:
This morning there was lots of activity in the anchorage when a giant barge with construction equipment and supplies was towed on to the beach to start the repairs to the pier. By the end of the afternoon they had unloaded all of the new pilings, wood and equipment - quite a huge undertaking and very fun to watch.
We had a full day of activities today:
David jumping off the upper deck
Dinghy rides
Stand up paddle boarding
I even got on the board for the first time this trip
And of course lots of cribbage

We decided to move the boat further up the island cut a little time off our trip home tomorrow and also to show David a part of the island he hadn't seen before. We picked up a mooring at Cherry Cove and then went ashore to have a drink at the Harbor Reef. Took a walk to the other side of the island to show him CAT Harbor.
Went on a dinghy ride to Emerald Bay and kayaked around Cherry Cove & Fourth of July Harbor but David was to sunburned to spend too much time outside.

We left the mooring at 5:30 headed back to Ventura. Saw lots more Rizzo dolphins and we were having a nice leisurely cruise home when we lost one of our transmissions and had to finish the last 30 miles of the trip on one engine. Vessel Assist met us inside the Ventura Harbor entrance and helped us get back into the slip. Not the best way to close our vacation. But all's well that ends well!
