Happy New Year from Santa Cruz Island!!
Laura is very close to being on the lung transplant list (in fact she ended up officially on the list on her birthday - January 9th) so we decided to make another quick trip to the islands while we could still leave Ventura.
The weather has been very strange. Two nights ago there was a terrible storm in Avalon that killed a Harbor Patrolman and a boater. Boats broke loose from the moorings and crashed onto the beach. One of our favorite boats, King Neptune, was destroyed on the beach. The storm blew through and the marine weather looked good for the next several days so we decided to get off the dock. It was very cold but the seas were flat and there wasn't much wind for our crossing. We saw quite a few grey whales today. One dove right in front of our boat - very exciting!
We headed to Yellowbanks but when we passed San Pedro Point the ocean turned into a washing machine. It was very windy and the seas were very confused - odd! The Coast Guard was the only boat in Smugglers and they were really rolling on their mooring. We decided to go to the other side of the island and see what it was like. It was beautiful in Prisoner's so we anchored for a few nights. We were the only boat in the anchorage that night.
A couple of more boats came into anchor the next morning. We spent the next couple of days being lazy - reading & relaxing.
Leaving Ventura Harbor on January 1, 2015
On the menu for New Year's dinner - Fennel Salad, Grilled Lobster, Mac & Cheese and Rombauer Chardonnay. Now that's the way to start off the New Year right!!
On the menu the second day for lunch was Patty Melt Sandwiches and for dinner Roasted Tomato Soup with Sunny Side Up Egg on a Crouton served with Peju Provence.
And the third day we had Lemony Chicken and Orzo Soup for lunch and a Pork Roast for dinner.
Time to head back to the mainland and see what the New Year has in store for us. (Little did we know it would be a year we would never forget!)
